The village of Manteigas is a place of incredible natural beauty, where it is possible to breathe air at the highest point of Portugal at 2000 meters. Shepherds have lived in these mountains since 1188, and this village is characterized by the weaving craft industry, an ancient tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. The long winter and snowfall in the mountains developed their own ecosystem and the dried, granite soil set the rhythm of activities. In the absence of favorable conditions for agriculture, sheep shepherds have a great influence on mountain life. The production of sheep wool products helps to protect them from bad mountain conditions.
